Project: Sammi
Project: Sammi is a short animated horror film. We follow a soldier who was sent out to explore an abandoned laboratory. We view the film from the perspective of the soldier’s helmet camera. When exploring the lab, the soldier slowly starts to realize that he is not the only one there…
This was a group project created with four people in total. I was in charge of mainly layout, modeling, and surfacing.

Breakdown
For Project: Sammi I focused mainly on designing the layout. I also created some models and surfaced them to help populate the scene.
I created a rough sketch of some layout options that I showed to my team.
We ended up going with the right sketch. I created a quick mockup in Maya to get a 3D representation. Then I created the layout in Unreal to get started on the actual layout itself.

Layout Unreal
I populated the scene with more props and created textures for the floor, walls, and ground. I placed the finished models in Unreal to get an idea of where they would be. Once the models were being textured, I would import them into Unreal and begin to semi-finalize the scene with prop placement.

Operating Area
After some feedback and the majority of the models being finished. I added more prop dressing and ended up with the final Layout of the short film. The idea was to make the lab quite messy not a place you would want to stay at. I added more items scattered around and wires hanging from the ceiling.
Camera Work
I based the camera work on our rough storyboard. (By Isabella Saliceti)
I knew that our camera needed to be more fluid and have movement since this was a camera on a person. I studied some footage from Go-Pro and also some body cam footage from Police and firefighters. With this in mind, I ended up attaching the camera to the head of a mannequin in Unreal and creating an animation with the mannequin to simulate a person wearing a helmet camera. The shot would have to be one single take and then cut to the helmet scene in the end.
After some feedback and minor adjustments to the camera, this was the final shot.
Models and Surfacing
I modeled and surfaced a few props to dress the scene and I also created textures for the wall, floor, and ceiling.
